Wireless Mouse NEOFIT BUFFALO BSMBB540 Review

I recently (February 2025) got a new Windows machine and a new mouse, so I'll be reviewing them.

I'd been using only my iPad Pro for a while, so it had been a long time since I'd used a mouse, and choosing one was quite difficult. There are so many more options now compared to before; when I went to a big electronics store, the sheer number of choices was overwhelming, and I was like, "How am I supposed to choose?"

The price range was also very wide, with gaming mice costing around 20,000 yen that made you wonder, "Is this even a mouse?", as well as cheap ones costing around 500 yen.

Based on these considerations, the criteria I decided to use for implementation were as follows:

- Wireless (I don't want to use up a USB port, so I need something that doesn't require a receiver)

• Long battery life

• Low price (under 4000 yen)

Based on this, I chose the BUFFALO BSMBB540 NEOFIT, which I'm introducing today. I chose BUFFALO because it's a reliable manufacturer with a market price of 2000-3000 yen.

Let's begin the review from here.

Opened

It is in the condition it was purchased in.

The tagline is "From comfortable grip to a sense of unity." Other sales pitches are also printed on the product.

Open the package and check the contents.

It's really helpful that AA batteries are included. It's especially frustrating when you buy something online and then find out you need something extra to use it immediately.

The instruction manual also serves as the warranty, so be sure not to lose it.

Main unit exterior

Let's start by looking at the top view.

It has a fairly complex shape. It's a fairly large size, so it doesn't feel cramped.

It has a large indentation to accommodate the thumb.

right side

It has a cutout to hold the ring finger and little finger securely.

front side

The overall design is tilted to the right (direction of use). This seems to be to prevent the entire arm from turning to the right and the shoulder from feeling cramped when gripping it.

The back also hangs down in a complex shape.

It has several control buttons. Details of the control buttons will be explained later.

Open the battery compartment and insert the included batteries.

It runs on a single AA battery. According to the manufacturer, it should last approximately 2.8 years, based on their own calculations. The manufacturer's calculation assumes that, in an 8-hour daily computer usage scenario, the mouse is running for 24 minutes, which is 3% of that time.

I'm not entirely sure about the validity of the calculation method, but since it's a sample battery that came with the product, I feel like it might last at least two years, even if it doesn't live up to the stated 2.8 years.

I tried to disassemble it, but unfortunately it seemed like it was riveted together and the only way to do it would be to destroy it, so I gave up.

It feels like you're holding it.

It grips exactly as designed. For men, it fits snugly in the hand. I find it quite easy to use in practice. If I had to nitpick, I wish it were a bit longer to provide more wrist support, but it's still pretty good.

Detailed dimensions.

It's the weight.

At 97g including the battery, it's not exactly a lightweight product.

While it's not a particularly compact mouse overall, I think it's just the right size considering its ease of use (especially for men). Many extremely small mice are very difficult to use, so this size feels just right.

Features

Now let's look at the features.

The middle button is for adjusting the cursor movement speed.

You can choose from three speeds: fast (2400dpi), standard (1600dpi), and slow (1000dpi) (I don't really understand the difference between these numbers and reality). When you press the corresponding button, a red LED will blink three times, twice, and once respectively to indicate the speed.

Although you only actually use the standard and slow settings, it's quite convenient.

There are forward and back buttons on the side, but I hardly ever use them.

On the back, there are four control buttons: a power button, a connect button, an optical sensor, and a connection switching button.

The connection switching button allows you to quickly switch between connections to three different devices, which is incredibly convenient. Since I also use an iPad, being able to switch instantly is extremely useful and I find it very handy.

I generally leave the power button on (it has a sleep mode). I haven't been able to fully test it, but the battery life of the device is very good, so I don't worry about leaving the power on.

Regarding the connect button, the Bluetooth connectivity is excellent, connecting instantly upon power-on and waking from sleep, so I generally don't use it. However, if the device has been waking from a long sleep, you will need to press the connect button.

The communication standard is Bluetooth 5.0, which is a very versatile standard, so it can connect to almost all devices that exist as of March 2025 (when this was written) (it is compatible with Bluetooth 4.0 and 4.2).

Overall, the device has just the right balance of features and an intuitive design, so I have no complaints. One particularly great feature is that infrequently used functions (device switching, connection button, power, etc.) are located on the back, so accidental operation is rare, saving me frustration.

Usability

In terms of usability, it's a reliable BAFFURO product, so there are no problems whatsoever; the button feel, cursor tracking, and everything else is comfortable.

However, despite being advertised as a quiet device, it makes a clicking sound when you press the buttons. It's not too bothersome, but it's not as quiet as the catalog claims—not quiet enough for late-night use, meetings, or cafes—and I think you'd have to be considerate of others at night.

However, it's perfectly fine in a cafe, so I wonder what kind of meeting would be bothered by this clicking sound?

In terms of actual usability, there are no issues, so here we will examine the connectivity and the areas (surfaces) on which the cursor can be moved accurately.

This product is an optical mouse that uses a blue LED, so according to the specifications it should be usable even in glossy environments. I'll try it out.

Here are some places where I actually tried it and it worked without any problems.

FinallyI tested it on a mirror and it worked perfectly, so it can be used anywhere there's a flat surface.

Next, I checked the connectivity with the iPad Pro, and there were absolutely no problems.

This iPad is a 4th generation model and uses Bluetooth 5.3, which is not the same as the mouse's 5.0, but it works perfectly fine.

Thanks to its performance, I can conveniently use my laptop and iPad side-by-side. Furthermore, since it uses a blue LED, I don't need a mousepad; as long as I have a flat surface, I can use it anywhere, which is really great.

My laptop's Bluetooth standard is also 5.3.

Even if you don't use multiple devices simultaneously, there seem to be many situations where this could be useful, such as when using a game console at home, another family member's device, or when teaching someone how to use a PC.

Summary

I think this mouse is head and shoulders above the rest, especially considering it's sold for under 3000 yen, or even as low as 2000 yen at some retailers.

The basic features are excellent: it uses a blue LED display, the mouse movement is linear, and the wireless communication standard is Bluetooth 5.0, so it works perfectly without any problems.

In addition to essential functions (such as scrolling), the cursor speed adjustment and device switching buttons are very convenient. While the grip isn't quite as snug as you might expect from a NEOFIT mouse, it's better than a mouse without any special features.

In addition to these, some features I personally like include a sleep mode that allows for fairly quick startup, and although I haven't tested it, the battery lasts a long time (my personal estimate is 2 years).

I can't really think of any flaws, but if I had to pick one, it would be that it lacks individuality, interest, and surprise.

This mouse is excellent in every respect, and it's priced so well that you won't regret buying it to try it out. I highly recommend it.
