This time, I'll be reviewing the Tokyo Marui Detonics .45 Combat Master.
Although it's an older model, released in 2007, it remains incredibly popular even in 2025. This is likely due to its status as a compact version of the classic M1911 and its regular appearances in movies, anime, and dramas.
In recent years, custom models have appeared in Gun Gale Online and Licorice Recoil (Tokyo Marui has already modeled them). For someone my age, being an older guy, I have a very strong memory of the main character (actor: Yutaka Mizutani) of the drama "Keiji Kizoku" (Detective Aristocrat) who had one when I was a child.
Let's take a look at the Detonics .45 Combat Master, incorporating information about the real-life model.

Overview of the Detonics .45 Combat Master Real Model
At the time, compact M1911-type models were not mass-produced and could only be custom-made by gunsmiths (one-off items), making them quite expensive. Therefore, there was a high demand for affordable, compact M1911 models (the Detonics .45 was also quite a luxury item back then).
Furthermore, in the 1970s, the United States experienced a surge in urban crime due to the recession, and there was a high demand for compact, self-defense guns (society was exhausted by the Vietnam War).
Up until then, the mainstream compact models for self-defense were small revolvers with a five-round capacity (at most .38 caliber), but with the rise in crime prevention awareness, there seems to have been an increased demand for compact automatic pistols in .45 caliber, which are considered the soul of Americans.

In this context, Detonics released the Combat Master as their first compact M1911 model in their catalog.
The model is not simply a compact version of the M1911, but possesses several technical features.
- Adoption of a cone barrel (likely a first)
The improved fit between the slide and barrel enhances accuracy. This is standard equipment on current high-end M1911 models.
• Multi-recoil spring system(Probably the first time)
A mechanism to suppress recoil.
- Grip safety has been removed (it is still included in some models).
To enable quick response during self-defense
- Rear sight moved forward
A design feature to prevent the rear sight from getting in the way when cocking the hammer.
At the time, it was assumed that the ammunition would be chambered and carried with the hammer down.
- Scallop-shaped (scallop shell-shaped) ejection port
Designed for reliable shell ejection.
Among its technical features, the cone barrel and multi-recoil spring system were highly innovative and form the basis of technologies that are now widely used.
*The cone barrel is standard on custom 1911s, and the multi-recoil spring system was first adopted in the GLOCK GEN.4.
This wasn't just a simple scaled-down version of the M1911, but a considerably more ingeniously designed compact M1911 model, yet it's difficult to say it was a commercial success.
・The price is simply too high.
Despite various improvements, it was not possible to achieve the same level of reliability as the M1911. It seems there were frequent jams.
Detonics lacked the financial resources and production capacity to ensure a stable supply.
Detonics itself has faced financial difficulties multiple times, going bankrupt and then reviving repeatedly (it seems to be dormant as of 2025).
Although not commercially successful, this is a symbolic model that pioneered the compact M1911 and the technology that continues to this day.
Tokyo Marui's Detonics .45 Combat Master closely replicates the features of the real-life model, so let's keep that in mind as we take a look.
Outer box, opened
Let's take a look at the outer box.

The design incorporates the snake logo, a symbol of Detonics (apparently it's a rattlesnake).
I looked into why Detonics uses a snake logo, and it seems the reason is as follows:
- Derived from the Gadsden flag, a symbol of the American Revolutionary War.
"Don't tread on me" is a symbol of freedom and self-defense.

- A symbol of a one-hit kill, like a rattlesnake, usually quiet but unleashing a deadly attack when necessary.
While it may be hard for Japanese people to imagine, for Americans, rattlesnakes are symbols of freedom and self-defense, and seem to represent an image of "not liking conflict, but getting things done when necessary."
Let's open the box.

It has an elaborate interior, as is typical of Tokyo Marui products. While the interior is well-designed, it's a 2009 product, so it doesn't have the same level of detail as more recent models from 2025.

The instruction manual includes a brief explanation of the real Detonics .45 Combat Master and an explanation of the airsoft gun, and it's interesting, so I think anyone who buys it will enjoy reading it.

Let's take a look at the exterior.

Other side

Aside from the rear sight position and the removal of the grip safety, it looks exactly like a more compact version of the M1911.

This product has a blasted finish, resulting in a matte, rough texture with reduced shine. While this finish is nice and not bad, the actual product is often made of stainless steel or steel with a bluing finish, so I think the overall feel is a little different (various finishes exist).

The Detonics .45 airsoft gun, especially the stainless steel model, might have a finish that closely resembles the bead-blasted finish of the real thing.

The distinctive cone barrel is a striking feature. We'll look at the cone barrel in more detail in the exterior details section.

The top of the slide has a flat section, which is probably a design feature to reduce its height. The distinctive rear sight also stands out.

The fact that the parting lines, which are characteristic of resin injection molding, are hidden clearly shows that this model has been designed with a focus on aesthetics.
Front

As expected of a .45 caliber, the muzzle is impressive. The muzzle also features molded rifling, showing meticulous attention to detail. However, it's a shame that the copper color of the inner barrel is so noticeable.
The girl

You can clearly see that the grip safety, a characteristic feature of the Detonics .45, has been omitted, and that the rear of the rear sight is flat.

It's considerably smaller than an M1911, and slightly smaller than a GLOCK 19. While its surface area is small enough to fit in a pocket, its thickness makes it impractical to actually carry and use in a pocket.
It's probably sized to be carried around in a handbag or something similar.

The actual dimensions also show that it is quite compact.
It's the weight.


The main unit is compact, but it weighs 481.5g, and the magazine weighs 153g, for a total of 634.5g, which is a fair amount of weight.
Exterior details
From here, we will break it down into sections and look at it in more detail.

1. Muzzle section
Its most distinctive feature is the cone barrel.

The angled portion of the barrel contacts the slide, fixing the barrel in place. This mechanism is said to improve accuracy by fixing the barrel in place (there are various theories, including the effect of weight and the heavy barrel effect).
Furthermore, since the barrel bushing unique to the M1911 can be eliminated, disassembly is easier and the number of parts is reduced, which is another advantage.


I think a major advantage of airsoft guns is that they are easy to disassemble.
The front sight is a low-profile type and is molded integrally with the slide, so it is basically not replaceable.

2. Slide center section

It's a simple engraving, just like on the DETONICS.45. The engraving seems a little shallow.
Next is the ejection port.


This part is also quite distinctive; the illustrated area is scallop-shaped (like a scallop shell) and the hole has been expanded. This kind of ingenuity is now common, and this person is considered the pioneer of it.
Furthermore, in actual models, the extractor is designed to move flexibly using a torsion spring (whereas it is usually a coil spring).
However, even with all these improvements, jams still occurred fairly frequently in the actual product, so designing a compact model seems difficult (basically, the slide recoil distance is insufficient).
3. Second half of the slides
It has a distinctive rear sight.

It seems that at the time, ammunition was carried in the chamber, and the rear sight was moved to make it easier to operate the hammer when firing.

While cocking the hammer and using a thumb safety is now the mainstream method, Jeff Cooper proposed it in the 1950s and 1960s, and it gradually spread, so it seems it wasn't yet the mainstream method at that time (the speed of information transmission was completely different from today).
The hammer is compact for portability.

Despite its older design and compact size, the rear sight is high and easy to see.
Also, the firing pin is a hexagonal bolt and not a realistic shape. Since the focus on the shape of the firing pin in airsoft guns only started in the 2010s, this is understandable for this product, which was newly released in 2009 (airsoft guns are evolving too).
4. Frame section
The frame is quite similar to the M1911, with the only distinguishing feature being the elimination of the grip safety.

Looking at it from the rear, it looks less like it was abolished and more like there simply wasn't enough space to install the grip safety.

Furthermore, due to its older design from the 1970s, it does not have any ambidextrous features.

As usual, the ASGK and Tokyo Marui markings are located above the trigger.
One thing that personally caught my attention was the excellent design of the grip's shape and color scheme.

operation, function
Let's start by looking at the control system.

The control levers are positioned in an easily accessible location, following the layout inherited from the M1911. However, most people will likely find the slide stop lever unreachable without changing their grip.
In reality, you rarely need to operate the slide stop lever; you'll more often release the magazine, pull the slide back, and disengage the slide stop, so I don't think it's a problem.
This model is a single-action model, so the various controls will not function unless you pull back the slide to cock the hammer.
With the hammer cocked, the thumb safety functions as shown in the picture below.


The trigger position remains unchanged even when the hammer is cocked, and there is almost no play in the trigger, allowing it to be pulled smoothly.
The weight is relatively light, making it quite easy to shoot.
The grip is compact, so it feels cramped when held by an adult man.


While there's ample room when using two fingers, it's unstable because there's no place for your little finger. If you want to use it comfortably with two fingers, you can use an aftermarket magnetic bumper or similar to support the area where your little finger rests for better stability.
The single-column magazine is quite slim, making it a very comfortable grip.
Since this is an older model, you'll need to field strip the hop-up adjustment dial to access it (details on how to field strip will be covered in the next disassembly guide).

The shape is designed so that you can easily see the hop-up strength. The photo above shows the position as it is straight out of the box, and with the hop-up set to about half, it's roughly the right setting for 0.2g BBs.
By the way, to make the hop packing last longer, I recommend keeping the amount of hops to a minimum when storing it.
While we're at it, let's take a look at the recoil spring after we've done the field stripping.

The recoil spring is double-layered, just like the real model. Furthermore, to prevent the rod from rotating, one spring is right-handed and the other is left-handed.
With airsoft guns, the recoil from the slide isn't that significant, so it's not particularly meaningful, but the realistic reproduction is a good point (the real thing has a much thicker spring).
Magazine
The magazine has a plated finish, giving it a very beautiful appearance. Since fewer and fewer companies are doing this kind of plating these days, I think this is a rare type of finish.

The round shape on the side of the magazine is actually a hole in the real thing, allowing you to see how many bullets are loaded.

Since it's a single-column magazine, it's quite thin.
On my unit, the angled machining area shown in the photo above was unmachined, preventing the magazine from being attached (the retailer fixed it for me). If you are having trouble attaching the magazine, checking whether or not there is angled machining and the amount of machining might solve the problem.

This magazine is single-column and holds 18+1 rounds (the real thing holds 6+1 rounds). Incidentally, airsoft guns can also be fed in double-column mode with this magazine.

In the real thing, the indicator protrudes when the magazine is fully loaded, but this is omitted in this model.
Live-fire performance verification
Before checking the actual firing performance, here are the conditions for measuring the initial velocity.

The conditions were a full magazine of HFC-134a, a magazine surface temperature of 22.4°C, and a room temperature of 12°C, with 18 rounds loaded (G&G bio BBs 0.2g). The low room temperature made it a challenging test for a single-column gas blowback model.
This is the initial velocity with the hop-up amount set to the middle (approximately 0.2g appropriate).

This is the fifth shot.

Despite the room temperature being 12℃, it achieved a decent initial velocity of 62.3 m/s and has since stabilized at around 60 m/s.
After that, as I continued firing, the rate of fire stabilized at around 55 m/s, and I was able to fire all the way to the slide hold-open.

It's remarkably stable; as expected from Tokyo Marui.
Since it's a compact model, the initial velocity is on the lower side, so the effective range is probably around 30 meters (it could probably go over 40 meters if you just focus on distance). As for the trajectory, since it's a Tokyo Marui product, I'm sure it will have an excellent trajectory.

Fuel efficiency
This is the weight of the magazine when it is fully filled with gas.

This is the weight of a magazine after firing 18 rounds, which is the full magazine's weight.

With 2.5g of BBs used for 18 shots, that works out to about 0.14g per shot, which I think is quite fuel-efficient (most BBs use around 0.2g).
Calculating how many shots you can get with a full tank of gas, an empty magazine weighs 153.0g and a full magazine weighs 158.0g, so the amount of gas needed is 5g. The gas consumption per shot is 0.14g, so theoretically you can get 35 shots, which is a little less than two magazines (36 shots).
*After checking, it seems that a full magazine holds about 2g of gas, so it should be enough for two magazines.
It varies greatly depending on the usage conditions, so it won't work exactly as calculated, but my feeling is that two magazines is just barely enough. If you're using one magazine, I think you should refill the gas after each shot to ensure it works reliably.
I suppose it's unavoidable since it's a compact single-column model with a small gas chamber.

It moves quickly and holds open securely.
Now, somewhat abruptly, I'd like to briefly explain what a fully gas-filled magazine looks like. This is just a little advice based on my own experience of struggling with single-column models.
Single-column gas guns have a small gas chamber capacity in the magazine, and if you fill it to the brim, there is no space for vaporization, so they tend to release raw gas directly when fired.
Therefore, if gas starts leaking from the valve while you're filling it, I strongly recommend stopping the injection immediately. The injection time is approximately 1 to 2 seconds.
You might be tempted to fill it up as much as you can, hoping to run out of gas while you're playing, but that just ends up being a waste, so it's best to restrain yourself and not overfill it (I used to fill it up as much as I could).
It might feel like "Is this enough?", but there's actually a decent amount of gas inside, so it's usually fine.

G&G Bio-Bullets 0.2g
It's inexpensive and accurate, so I use it for a wide range of purposes, from performance testing to airsoft games. It's been my favorite since it first came to Japan (around 2008). It lasts a long time for a biodegradable product.

It's 0.25g. I generally use 0.25g BBs when playing airsoft.
Summary

Despite being an older model released in 2007 and having a single-column magazine which is less efficient, it operated smoothly and was a very high-performance compact automatic pistol even by today's standards (you can be sure there will be no problems with the trajectory, as it's made by the reliable Tokyo Marui).
They've put a lot of effort into the exterior design as well, and I think they've realistically reproduced the features of the Detonics.

We put a lot of effort into the finishing process, including a blasted surface finish.
In terms of usability, it's just as good as the proven M1911, and its compact size makes it excellent.
Overall, I think this is a great choice for those who like classic, compact models.
One point that personally concerns me is how well the combination of black and a blasted finish replicates the real model (it's basically very beautiful and impressive). When imagining the real model, the black color inevitably brings to mind the image of a bluing finish.
If you're particular about the realism of the finish, I recommend choosing the stainless steel model, as it will be closer to the actual stainless steel with a blasted finish.
