In this article, we'll be explaining the CZ75, the second real-world airsoft gun we've used in this series.
The CZ75 has always been very popular in Japan, and for my generation, some of the most representative works that come to mind are Larry Vincent from Gunsmith Cats, Jed Goshi from Pineapple Army, and Dr. Tenma from MONSTAR (there are many others, of course).
The CZ75 is a popular model, but due to its unique structure and the difficulty in reproducing it, only a limited number of Japanese airsoft gun manufacturers produce models of it (KSC is doing a good job, and recently Carbon8 has been doing so).
I own a KSC CZ75 2nd HW version, so I'll use that to explain the actual CZ75.
*This article aims to provide educational explanations from a mechanical engineering perspective regarding the safe hobby use of airsoft guns.
This does not promote acts of violence, the use of weapons, weapon modification, practical evaluation, or violation of laws and regulations.
What is the CZ 75?: An outlier born from the Cold War structure.
The CZ 75 is an automatic handgun that uses 9mm Parabellum ammunition and was developed in Czechoslovakia (at the time) in 1975 (the 75 model of the CZ).

The CZ75 was developed through a rather unusual process, being "a product manufactured using Eastern technology but for Western market principles."
Typically, weapons development in the communist bloc follows the standardization of the Warsaw Pact. In the 1970s, Eastern Bloc countries used the 9x18mm Makarov as their standard (the Western 9mm is 9x19, a different weapon). However, the CZ 75, from its inception, was a product granted the privilege of deviating from military standards purely for the economic motive of "earning foreign currency (exports to the West)."


This political background gave designer František Koucký the freedom to disregard the prevailing trends in Eastern Bloc firearms design at the time (such as increased productivity through press forming and simple blowback mechanisms).

As a result, it was created with a concept unthinkable within the Warsaw Pact at the time: "machining without regard for cost, excessive attention to ergonomics, and the use of the most powerful Western ammunition, the 9x19mm Parabellum."

Here, we'll look at the historical background behind the creation of the CZ75.
The Czechoslovak firearms industry at the time
Czechoslovakia has a long tradition of heavy industry and weapons manufacturing, one of the most prominent in Central Europe, dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire (commonly known as the Dual Monarchy).
Its technological prowess, exemplified by companies like Škoda and the Brno Arsenal (Zbrojovka Brno), ensured that it consistently functioned as an extremely important weapons factory for the occupying power, both during the Nazi German annexation and the Soviet satellite state era (and this continued into the Soviet era).


However, Czechoslovakia was not simply a "vassal state of the Soviet Union." While many countries within the Warsaw Pact were forced to license-produce Soviet-made weapons (such as the AK-47 and Makarov PM), Czechoslovakia stubbornly stuck to its own designs.


The Vz.58 assault rifle, a representative product, looks similar to the AK-47, but its internal mechanisms are completely different. Other weapons such as the Vz.61 Scorpion submachine gun and the Vz.52 pistol all have their own unique design philosophies that differ from Soviet standards.



This technological independence was the fertile ground for the creation of the unconventional CZ75.
The launch of the CZ75 project: Mr. Koutsky's final work.
In the 1960s, the communist regime in Czechoslovakia faced a severe shortage of foreign currency.
Trade within the Soviet-led economic bloc (Comecon) was primarily settled through barter transactions and exchangeable rubles, resulting in a depletion of "hard currencies" (such as the US dollar and the West German mark) necessary for importing technology and products from Western countries.
In 1969, the Czechoslovak Ministry of Foreign Trade secretly instructed the Uherský Brod State Arsenal (Česká zbrojovka Uherský Brod: CZUB, later CZ) to develop a 9mm Parabellum pistol exclusively for export, as a purely "foreign currency earning project" unrelated to Soviet military doctrine.

The chief designer, František Koucký, was a designer nearing retirement. He had worked on many military firearms in the past, but had always been bound by the military's stringent specifications. However, in the CZ 75 project, Koucký was given unprecedented design freedom under the pretext of it being for "export."
- There is no need to reuse existing manufacturing lines.
- Costs are irrelevant (because it will surely sell for a high price in Western currency anyway).
- Prioritizing performance over productivity was acceptable (unusual in the communist bloc at the time).
- They don't have to follow the Warsaw Pact's military standardization and specifications (because they won't be using them themselves anyway).
This freedom allowed for exceptionally high-quality finishes for Eastern Bloc products of the time, and frame designs that made extensive use of complex machining processes (almost to the level of a hobbyist).
As the culmination of his design career, Koutsky combined the double-column magazine of the Browning Hi-Power, the inside rail of the SIG P210, and the double-action mechanism of the S&W M39 and other models to create his ideal combat automatic pistol.



Cold War-era distribution networks and Western evaluations
The CZ75 astonished Western experts the moment it was unveiled at the Madrid trade fair in 1975. However, its distribution to the general market proved extremely difficult.
*At that time, Spain was under the Franco regime and therefore had ties to the Eastern Bloc.

The United States imposed high tariffs and restrictions on imports from communist countries, making direct imports virtually impossible. Initially, small quantities flowed into the US via Canada and West Germany (with Frankonia Jagd acting as an agent). This indirect route is one of the major factors that contributed to the mythical status of the CZ75.
The Rhodesian Conflict and the Mercenary Route
In conflict zones in Africa (South Africa, Rhodesia, etc.), Eastern Bloc weapons were flowing in through loopholes in international arms embargoes. The CZ75, deployed in combat there, established a reputation for being jam-free and accurate, and this reputation then spread back into Western specialist magazines.

These developments were not CZUB's intention, but the reliability proven in real-world use and the rarity in the West will inadvertently determine the brand value of the CZ75.
North Korea's involvement: The mystery of the Baekdu Mountain pistol
The fact is that North Korea also produced unauthorized copies of the CZ75 pistol (or perhaps manufactured under license, it's unclear) as the Baekdu Mountain pistol. It held status as a pistol for high-ranking officers even within the Eastern Bloc, indicating that the CZ75 was recognized as a special pistol regardless of East or West.

Rumor has it that the second General Secretary Kim Jong-il was so pleased with the CZ75 he was presented with that it led to its production within North Korea (CZ75B?).
The Wonder Nine boom and Jeff Cooper's evaluation
During the Wonder Nine boom in the American market in the 1980s (a trend towards high-capacity, double-action 9mm automatic pistols), the CZ75 was positioned at the pinnacle of this trend.
*Apparently, this category was called "Wonder Nine" in America, but it's probably an obsolete term now.
It's a well-known story, but Jeff Cooper, an authority on combat and sport shooting, was a staunch supporter of the .45 ACP/1911, yet he solidified the mythologism of this gun by stating, "If you have to use 9mm, this (CZ 75) is the only option" (a historical irony that led to the failure of the Bren Ten).
This exceptional recognition by an authority has shaped the brand beyond mere practicality, and continues to function as the foundation of the brand image of CZ as a choice for connoisseurs, even into the 2020s.
CZ75 Basic Mechanism
Now let's take a look at the mechanism of the CZ75.

Short recoil and breech mechanism: Browning system
The CZ75 employs a short recoil system that uses a cam slot (elongated hole) under the barrel, similar to the Browning Hi-Power, to tilt the barrel and release the breech.

Advantages of linkless structure
Because it does not use a swing link like the 1911 (Government) model, the number of parts is reduced and rigidity is increased. Since links are wear parts, this contributes to improved long-term durability.


However, this linkless structure can lead to excessive load on the slide stop lever, which will be discussed later.
Locking lug mechanism
There are two lugs (protrusions) on the top of the barrel, which engage with grooves on the inside of the slide. This is a robust and fundamentally sound locking mechanism. This engagement withstands the enormous pressure during firing (approximately 3000 atmospheres for a 9mm Parabellum round).


Short recoilCam shape design philosophy
The angle and shape of the cam are crucial in determining the recoil speed and the timing of the short recoil unlock. The CZ75's cam design is tuned to provide a relatively smooth unlock and to soften the recoil shock.

The cam slot shape is not a simple arc, but a complex three-dimensional curved surface. This allows for smoother barrel tilting and smoother cartridge ejection (which looks like it would be difficult to machine).

Commitment to all-steel construction: The transition from machining to casting (the transition from the 1st to the 2nd and subsequent versions).
While 9mm automatic pistols of the 70s and 80s were transitioning to aluminum frames, the CZ75 was primarily made of all steel (polymer was experimentally used in HK's VP70, but it was a commercial failure).
This all-steel construction unintentionally helps reduce recoil (some models are still made entirely of steel, such as the SP01).
Recoil reduction mechanism
The heavy frame (approximately 1 kg) causes the entire gun to recoil slowly, physically reducing the recoil felt by the shooter.
In addition to reduced recoil, the following advantages are also obtained.
- Good rigidity balance – minimal deflection
- High heat capacity – less likely to overheat during rapid firing.
- Durability – Highly resistant to wear and tear, allowing for long-term use.
Of these all-steel components, the frame's manufacturing method has changed significantly over time, so let's now look at the evolution of the manufacturing process and the changes in quality.
1975-1980s (Early models, short-rail era, commonly known as the 1st model)

- Machined from forged material
- Tool marks (cutting marks) remain inside, but the strength is high.
- A large portion of the product is handcrafted by skilled artisans, resulting in a beautiful finish (blue finish).
- It is said that there was variation in the quality of the steel used.
Taking advantage of the low labor costs characteristic of the Eastern Bloc economy at the time, the production system was close to handmade by skilled craftsmen, resulting in a very beautiful and highly regarded premium model (still legendary).
Rumor has it that the production run will be less than 15000 units.
1980scomesTransition period (long rail system, commonly known as the 2nd generation and beyond)
In order to increase production of the CZ75 at a lower cost and boost exports, CZUB sought alternative sources for steel frame manufacturing in the late 1970s.
In 1979, a production contract was signed with Alfa of Spain for cast frames to expand production. As intended, a significant reduction in finishing work was achieved, but the quality of the steel was inferior compared to the short-rail models forged in Czechoslovakia (precision casting, specifically lost-wax casting).


*At that time, Spain was in a period of turmoil immediately following the end of the Franco regime and did not belong to either the West or the East, so the agreement could be made.
In March 1979, cracks were discovered during testing of the Spanish cast frame. As a result, a decision was made to reinforce the frame and slide, leading to the upgrade to the long-rail model, commonly known as the 2nd model.

*There is a theory that the chief designer, Koutsky, wanted long rails from the beginning.
In the mid-1980s, CZUB stopped using Spanish-made cast frames and switched to producing its own cast frames. (From the CZ75B to the present day; the CZ75B is still a catalog model).
Some users who are staunch believers in machined wheels may have a psychological resistance to them, and while the short-rail models from the communist era are praised for their beautiful finishes due to the large proportion of hand-processing by craftsmen, there is a complex evaluation that the quality of the steel used was inconsistent.
Excellent ergonomics
The grips on the CZ75 are highly praised, often described as "becoming an extension of your hand," and this is a point of considerable attention to detail for chief designer Koutsky, so let's take a closer look.
Grip angle and cross-sectional shape
The beaver tail design, with its rear end shaped to deeply grip the webbing of the hand, naturally allows for a high-grip hold.

The grip's cross-section features an exquisite elliptical shape, including the grip panels, while still accommodating a double-column magazine.

Because the palm of a human hand is not flat but curved, the grip of the CZ75 is designed to conform to the curve of the hand, creating an excellent shape that gives you a feeling of it sticking to your hand the moment you grip it.
Excellent grip angle
The grip angle is set so that the wrist angle when a person points their finger at an object matches the wrist angle when holding the CZ 75.

The human wrist can exert the most force at an angle of approximately 110 degrees from its natural position. The grip angle of the CZ75 is set based on this human body structure, making it less tiring to hold for extended periods (a remarkably well-thought-out design).
This ensures that even when aiming without looking at the sights, the muzzle naturally points towards the target.
A philosophy that emphasizes the second strike: Adoption of a double-action mechanism.
In the 70s, due to concerns about ammunition quality, partly because Czechoslovakia was part of the Eastern Bloc, a double-action mechanism was adopted to prioritize the second-strike capability, allowing the firing pin to be struck again by pulling the trigger without pulling back the slide in the event of a misfire (also serving as a means of rapid response).
*Double-action reels were rare in the 70s, especially in the Eastern Bloc.


To achieve both double-action and single-action operation, as well as a crisp trigger feel, a complex trigger and hammer mechanism is employed (with intricate linkages). The designer, Koutsky, holds four patents for this mechanism (patent issues will be discussed later).


*The Browning Hi-Power, which is said to have been used as a reference, also has a complex mechanism that is considered a weakness.
In some individual units, the complexity of this linkage resulted in a slight dragging sensation in the trigger feel during single-action firing (the long linkage caused a feeling of dragging against the frame wall).
In typical mass-produced items, the low labor costs and lack of consideration typical of the Eastern Bloc meant that trigger feel performance was ensured through manual polishing by skilled craftsmen. However, it seems that some units were not polished sufficiently.
Cock & Rock
The CZ75 is a double-action/single-action pistol, yet it features a manual safety, allowing you to engage the safety while the hammer is cocked (locked).

This was an unusual design for double-action/single-action pistols of the time. The safety on most double-action/single-action pistols (such as the Walther P38 and Beretta 92) was primarily designed for decocking and was not intended to be carried with the hammer cocked.
This resulted in the following significant advantages for the CZ75:
・For users familiar with the 1911 (in the American market), it can be carried using the cock-and-lock mechanism.
- Can be carried with the hammer down for users who prefer double-action.
In the United States at that time, making the controls similar to those of the M1911 was essential for market acceptance.
However, the early models up to the Type B lacked a decocker, requiring the dangerous operation of holding the hammer down with a finger while pulling the trigger to safely drop it (later models evolved to have a safety that also served as a decocker).
The most distinctive feature of the CZ75: Inside slide rails
Here, we will explain the inside rail (or inner slide) system, one of the key features of the CZ 75, where the frame encloses the slide.


Chief designer Koutsky noticed and decided to incorporate the inside rail structure, which was considered the source of the extremely high accuracy of the Swiss SIG P210 (the P210 was introduced in 1949).


This inside rail structure offers the following significant advantages:
Improved rigidity of the connection between the slide and the frame.
By increasing the contact area between the slide and the frame and minimizing play, the structural accuracy is improved.
Lower center of gravity (Low Bore Axis)
By reducing the slide thickness, the bore axis can be brought closer to the grip. This suppresses the rotational moment (muzzle jump) during firing, making it easier to regain sights during rapid fire.
However, the idea of a lower center of gravity is a misconception; in reality, the barrel axis itself does not lower because the height of the breech block (the part that closes the chamber) is necessary.

However, reducing the exposed area of the slide creates a visual and sensory effect that makes the gun feel more secure in the hand. From the shooter's subjective perspective, the gun's center of gravity feels closer to the palm, improving perceived recoil control. This forms the basis of the reputation that "CZ guns are easy to shoot."
These two advantages enable the CZ75 to achieve a high hit rate.
However, this inner slide mechanism presented a major challenge: its complex structure and difficulty in manufacturing. In fact, the Swiss P210 had extremely high manufacturing costs and was produced in small quantities (they later developed the P220 in 1976, which was more suitable for mass production).
The specific difficulties include the undercutting of frames, which are thick, complex in shape, made of hard steel (equivalent to JIS SCM440), and are large in volume. This is an extremely difficult task (even today, it's a type of project that is commonly refused). *1

The solution is to shorten the inner slide groove rail. This reduces the machining distance, making it significantly more productive than the P210 (in fact, the short rail is a sophisticated compromise between performance and mass production). *2

This is how the CZ75's inside rail system, which is still in use today, was realized.
*1: Undercutting is relatively easy on typical slides because the slides are thin and have a simple shape, allowing for greater freedom in chucking (fixing), although it is still disliked.
*2: As evidence that chief designer Koutsky was aiming for long rails, the early sketches included long rails, and they were later made into long rails during the casting process.
Weaknesses of the early CZ75
Now let's look at the weaknesses of the early CZ75 (even the best products have their weak points).
Low-cycle fatigue failure of the slide stop lever
The most well-known weakness among CZ 75 users is the breakage of the slide stop lever.
Destruction mechanism
It has an unusual design where the slide stop lever absorbs the cam action of the barrel. Therefore, the lever absorbs the entire recoil of the blowback with each shot.


In particular, the use of high-powered ammunition (+P rounds) and the wear of the recoil spring increase the slide's recoil speed, which in turn increases the impact of the cam slot striking the pin.
This significantly shortens the lifespan before fatigue failure (resulting in low-cycle fatigue failure).

User preventiontreatment
Many heavy users seem to consider the slide stop lever a consumable item and always carry a spare.
Furthermore, it appears that measures have been taken to control the slide's recoil speed and mitigate impact by replacing and managing the recoil spring with an appropriate load (pounds).
In the aftermarket, slide stop levers made from higher-strength materials (tool steel, titanium alloy, etc.) and with improved shapes to relieve stress are available (Cajun Gun Works and CZ Custom Shop are said to be highly regarded).
Trigger spring breakage
The trigger return spring (the spring that returns the trigger forward) is said to have lower durability compared to its rivals.
As mentioned earlier, the CZ75's trigger mechanism has a complex linkage to accommodate both double-action and single-action firing. This linkage consists of multiple springs, and the trigger return spring in particular experiences significant deformation.

This will shorten the lifespan of the spring.
Impact and countermeasures
Aftermarket parts (from companies like Cajun Gun Works and Mec-Gar) offer higher quality materials (piano wire, stainless steel) and springs with stress-distributing shapes, making user-side upgrades commonplace.
Many shooters seem to replace their trigger springs every 500 to 1000 rounds.
Ammunition compatibility: Chamber dimensions and rifling shape
The barrel of the CZ75 tends to have a short throat and lead before the rifling begins.

This means that, depending on the projectile, the tip is more likely to come into direct contact with the rifling (the shape varies slightly depending on the ammunition manufacturer).
Problems that arise
When using ammunition with long projectiles and thick tip shapes (certain hollow-point bullets or heavy bullets), the following problems tend to occur:
・Malfunction: The projectile gets caught in the rifling, preventing the slide from advancing completely.
・Ammunition Removal Trouble: When removing ammunition from the chamber, the bullet gets stuck in the rifling, and only the cartridge case comes out.
In particular, modern hollow-point ammunition has a larger bullet tip to enhance its range of motion. This is largely unavoidable, as this ammunition shape did not exist when the CZ75 was designed (in the 1970s).
The most common solution seems to be having a specialist enlarge the throat portion of the barrel (throat expansion, chamber reaming).
Safety of the half-cock notch (early model): A design flaw
In the earliest models (pre-Type B, roughly 1975-1992) and some clones, there was a risk of the sear breaking or accidental discharge if the trigger was pulled from the half-cocked position of the hammer.

In the initial design, the shape and angle of this half-cock notch were inappropriate, which could cause the sear to break under strong impact or excessive force applied to the trigger.
One of the causes is a flawed linkage mechanism in the trigger system, where the input load is amplified by the lever ratio of the linkage, resulting in excessive load on the internal components.
The CZ75B, introduced in 1993, added a firing pin block (fire pin safety device) (partly due to product liability laws).

This mechanism meant that the firing pin could not move forward physically unless the trigger was pulled all the way, but it is said to have added a sandy feel to the trigger pull.
* Drag the trigger to feel the added pin.
In models designed for competitive shooters (such as the SP-01 Shadow), this mechanism is intentionally omitted, prioritizing trigger feel in the design.
Strange phenomena related to the trademark, patents, and other rights of CZ75
The CZ75 is quite interesting in terms of patents, trademarks, and other rights issues, a phenomenon born from the Cold War structure of the time, so let's take a brief look at it.
Designated as confidential patent
In 1975, the design of the CZ75 was registered as a secret patent (No. 1316-75, etc.) in Czechoslovakia (including the four patents for the trigger mechanism mentioned earlier).
The reason it was designated a secret patent stemmed from the unique nature of the patent system in Czechoslovakia at the time. In that country, there was a system in place where technologies related to military affairs and security were designated as secret patents without exception.
The CZ75, a handgun and therefore a military/police weapon, also fell into this category and automatically became subject to a secret patent.
This measure meant that the technology was treated as a military secret, and international patent applications that were intended for public disclosure became structurally impossible.
This allowed Western manufacturers to disassemble, measure, and copy the CZ75 without legal risk, leading to an explosion of clones (imitations) from Italy (Tanfoglio), Israel (IMI/IWI), Switzerland (Sphinx), and the United States (Springfield P9, etc.).
The paradoxical effects of cloning: market standardization
Typically, clones diminish the value of the original. When the market is flooded with cheap copies, the original brand value declines, leading to price competition and eventually the demise of the original—a typical pattern.
However, the following backflow phenomenon occurred in the CZ75.
Mechanisms to compensate for supply shortages
During the Iron Curtain period (1975-1989), when originals were difficult to obtain, clones satisfied market demand. Copies made by Tanfoglio (Italy) flooded the American market, elevating the CZ-style control system to one of the global standards.

This contributed to increasing the recognition of the CZ brand. Users who used the clones had the expectation that "the original CZ75 must be even better," and sought out the original after the end of the Cold War.
Outsourcing evolution: Decentralization of technology development
Because companies like Tanfoglio had pioneered the development of competition-spec customs and caliber variations (.41AE, 10mm Auto, .40S&W), CZUB was able to accelerate its modernization (from the CZ75B onwards) after the end of the Cold War by re-importing or confirming that know-how and market data.

CZ headquarters was able to incorporate market-proven improvements without incurring research and development costs (CZUB has become a private company, CZ Corporation).
As a result, it established itself as the "most copied handgun in the world," second only to the Government (1911), and a market for third-party parts and holsters was formed.
Even today, the aftermarket industry for the CZ75 is huge, with numerous specialized companies such as Cajun Gun Works (custom parts), Mec-Gar (magazines), VZ Grips (grip panels), and Springer Precision (competition parts).
These suppliers provide parts that CZ headquarters doesn't develop (such as ultra-thin grip panels, lightweight slides, and competition trigger kits), and the CZ75 community is still thriving.
Major clone groups
Italian clone (Tanfoglio family)
Ironically, the Italian company Tanfoglio is the greatest successor and improver of the CZ75.

The following technical improvements have been made to the EAA Witness series (the name used in the United States).
- Removal of the firing pin block (competition model): Improved trigger feel
- Reconfiguration of hammer springs: Improved disassembly and maintenance.
- Use of stronger steel materials: such as 4140 chromium-molybdenum steel.(Similar to SCM440 in JIS standards)
Furthermore, we developed a large-frame model that modified the CZ75's structure to allow it to fire .45ACP and 10mm Auto ammunition.
This allowed them to achieve multi-caliber designs before CZ itself.
The Tanfolio maximized the potential of the CZ75's basic design, leading to a reversal of the concept at CZ headquarters, demonstrating that "this kind of development is also possible."
Israeli Klon (IMI/IWI Jericho 941): A Fusion of Designs
Commonly known as the Baby Eagle, it was developed by Israel Military Industries (IMI, later IWI) with technical assistance (component supply) from Tanfoglio.

Its most notable feature is the incorporation of design elements from the Desert Eagle (such as the slide shape). While it looks like a Desert Eagle, the internal mechanism is entirely a CZ75 (tanfolio type).

Some models feature polygonal rifling in the barrel, improving gas sealing and durability. This is another example of our unique technological advancements.
Swiss clone (Sphinx): The pinnacle of ultra-precision machining
This is an ultra-high-quality CZ clone from Sphinx, a Swiss company.

The clearance between the slide and the frame is controlled to within 0.01 mm, allowing them to move as smoothly as if they were a single, integrated unit.
The Sphinx 3000 series adopted a hybrid structure in which the frame was divided into an upper (steel or aluminum) and a lower (grip section, polymer or aluminum), and materials were combined. This may have influenced the design of the later CZ P-07/09.

The Sphinx is extremely expensive ($2000-$3000) and is positioned more as a work of art than a mass-produced item. However, its existence contributed to the image of the CZ 75 as a high-end, premium timepiece.
Turkish Clones (Canik, Sarsilmaz): The Rise of New Forces
Since the 2010s, Turkey's firearms industry has emerged, supplying large quantities of high-quality, low-priced CZ clones (such as the Canik Shark and Tristar series).

With Turkey's accession to NATO, clones that meet rigorous durability tests (NATO STANAG standards) are now being manufactured, ending the era of cheap and shoddy products (they could now have others meet the standards with money).
Copies of China and North Korea: Mysterious Routes
China's Norinco (Northern Industry) also manufactured copies of the CZ 75 (such as the NZ-75). The North Korean Baekdu Mountain pistol has also been linked to the CZ 75, but details are unclear.

Its position in modern times and its evolution as a competition gun.
After the end of the Cold War, Czechoslovakia was dissolved, and CZ was privatized (1992), and the CZ75 was finally supplied in large quantities to the Western market through official channels.
However, by that point, clone manufacturers such as Tanfolio had already dominated the market, and CZ headquarters was forced to fight to reclaim its lost market share, using its brand power as the original manufacturer as its weapon.
The role of Merckx as a foreign exchange earning machine under a planned economy
In the industrial structure of the communist bloc, the incentive for companies (state-owned factories) is usually to meet quotas. However, in the CZ75 project, earning dollars was the top priority.
Merckx was the Czechoslovakian state-owned foreign trade corporation. It exclusively handled the export of the CZ75, researched Western market prices, and adopted a strategy of setting prices lower than its competitors (Browning Hi-Power and S&W automatics) while outperforming them in terms of performance.
As a double standard in quality control, export products were rigorously inspected, while there is limited documentation on how domestic and regional products, as well as B-grade items, were handled. Many are believed to have ended up on the collector market as pre-series items or were given as gifts to Communist Party officials (likely to be intended as gifts for North Korea and China).
The introduction of the CZ75B: Compliance with safety standards
The CZ75B, introduced in 1993, is a model that added a firing pin block. This was an improvement made to meet safety standards in the American market (product liability laws, etc.) (it also served as a measure against half-cock breakage).

At the same time, this was also a period of modernization in the production process (in-house manufacturing of precision lost-wax casting). Standard features of the time were incorporated, such as the adoption of a ring hammer and a change to a square trigger guard.
The undisputed champion as a competition gun: IPSC/USPSA Production Division
In modern times, the CZ75 (especially the Shadow 2 series) has become the de facto standard in the production divisions of IPSC and USPSA.
The influence of the sports industry through IPSC/USPSA (shooting competitions)
The CZ75's reputation was actually solidified not by police or military agencies, but by practical shooting competitions (sports) such as the IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation).
The Production Division is a competition category for mass-produced firearms with limited modifications. Modifications such as grip changes and sight replacements are permitted, but major changes to the trigger mechanism or slide weight reduction are prohibited.
In this category, the CZ75 (and its derivatives, SP-01 Shadow and Shadow 2) boasts an overwhelming market share. It is estimated that 70-80% of top finishers in the World Championships and European Championships use CZ75 series models.


Weight War: Mass is Justice
While polymer autos are competing to reduce weight, competition-spec CZs are doing the opposite, increasing weight.
The standard CZ75 weighs about 1kg, but the Shadow 2 weighs about 1.2kg, and by adding brass grip panels and barrel weights, the gun's weight is increased to 1.3kg to 1.5kg in an attempt to physically eliminate the recoil of 9mm ammunition.
This is the result of pursuing the aforementioned mass effect to its extreme. Heavier guns have less recoil, faster aiming recovery, and higher accuracy during continuous firing.
Portability is not important in competition. You simply hang it from your belt and walk a few dozen meters. Therefore, the weight disadvantage is negligible, and only the advantages stand out.
Optimization of Shadow 2 using CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering).
Shadow 2 is based on the CZ75 SP-01 Shadow and features the following optimizations.
- Slide center of gravity: Slightly moved backward to improve recoil behavior.
- Barrel closing timing: Optimizing unlock timing through fine-tuning of the cam path.
- Trigger reset distance: The reset distance has been shortened (approximately 2mm) by changing the shape of the sear.
- Enlarged magazine well: Makes magazine insertion easier during reloading.
These features were achieved through CAE (computer-aided engineering) and feedback from top shooters.
A virtuous cycle of evolution
Requests from competitive shooters (such as trigger response, magazine well size, and sight visibility) were directly fed back to CZ headquarters' development department, resulting in the creation of competition-specific models like the Shadow and TS (Tactical Sport).


This creates a positive cycle that further enhances the brand image. The reputation of being a gun that can win competitions has spread to general users, increasing the overall value of the CZ 75.
Colt CZ Group: A historic comeback
In 2021, the Czech company CZG (CZ Group) acquired Colt, an iconic American company (this was also news in Japan).


In 1975, the CZ75 was created by studying famous Western firearms such as the Browning Hi-Power (FN Herstal, Belgium) and the Colt 1911 (USA), and combining their best features. In other words, the Colt was one of the models, and the CZ was one of its variations.
Surprisingly, about 50 years later, the situation reversed.
Technological synergies and brand strategy
CZ gained production capabilities in North America and strong connections with the U.S. military and law enforcement agencies (a legacy of Colt).
The Colt 1911 and CZ 75 are both the pinnacle of all-steel hammer automatic pistols. The fact that these two are owned by the same group has allowed them to dominate the premium classic market, competing against polymer automatics (Glock, SIG P320).
Coexistence with polymer frame versions (P-07/P-09/P-10)
CZ also offers modern polymer-framed automatic pistols (P-07, P-09) and the striker-fired P-10 series.


Omega Trigger System: Introduction of Modular Design
The Omega Trigger, introduced in the P-07/P-09, is a modular system that simplifies the complex trigger mechanism of the CZ 75, reduces the number of parts, and allows users to freely swap out the safety and decocker.
Establishing a division of niches
- P Series (Polymer): Practical, portable, military/police use (low cost, lightweight, maintenance-free)
- 75 Series (Metal): For competition, hobbies, collections, and special forces (high precision, high rigidity, high price)
This division of roles allows us to avoid internal competition (cannibalization) while covering all sectors of the market.
Chronological Details: The Birth and Evolution of the CZ75
Dawn (1969-1980)
- 1969: Frantisek Koutsky begins design work.
- 1975: Prototype unveiled at a trade fair in Madrid, Spain, and production begins.
- 1976: The first mass-produced model (commonly known as the "short rail" model). It features a shorter slide rail length, resulting in higher manufacturing costs.

- 1977-78: Western experts such as RJ Nelson wrote articles. Jeff Cooper's assessment marked the beginning of the myth.
- 1980: Design change, transition to long rails. Simplified slide and frame shapes to improve production efficiency.

Diffusion period (1981-1990)
- Mid-1980s: Clones of the Tanfoglio (Italy), ITM (Switzerland/AT84), and Springfield P9 (USA/Italian parts assembly) appear.
- 1985: The CZ85 was introduced. This model featured ambidextrous slide stop and safety. Due to the increased complexity of the mechanism, there were also initial problems.

- 1989: The Velvet Revolution, the collapse of the communist regime.
Modernization period (1991-2005)
- 1992: CZ Corporation is privatized.
- 1993: The CZ75B was introduced. It featured an added firing pin block, a ring hammer, and a square trigger guard. The modern standard was established.

- Late 1990s: Expansion of variations including CZ75 BD (Decocker), CZ75 Compact, and CZ75 Auto (fully automatic model).



- 2001: P-01 introduced (compact model). Features an aluminum frame and accessory rails. NATO certified (assigned NSN number). Cleared one of the world's most stringent military tests.

Maturity and Specialization Stage (2006-Present)
- 2006: The CZ75 SP-01 Shadow is released. A competition model that eliminates the firing pin block and maximizes trigger feel. It took the IPSC world by storm.

- 2016: Shadow 2 announced. The SP-01 evolved further to be more specialized for competition.

- 2021: CZG acquires Colt. The company name is changed to Colt CZ Group SE.


Summary

The CZ75 was a product born in the unique political environment of Czechoslovakia under the Warsaw Pact during the Cold War. Interestingly, it deviated significantly from the initial plan, and as a result of many coincidences and contradictions, it came to be recognized as the world's best auto combat weapon.
The essence of the CZ75, which we have analyzed in this article, can be summarized into three peculiar conditions.
Political background – Products developed and produced in the East but intended for the Western market.
Unique economic environment – due to secret patents, international protection was unavailable, and clones were manufactured all over the world.
Design Philosophy – Initially intended for military and police use, but also dominated shooting competitions.
Products created to earn foreign currency became mythologized in the West for the reasons mentioned above, failures in intellectual property protection facilitated platformization, clone manufacturers took over technological development, and the original companies re-imported those products. Ultimately, Eastern Bloc companies, the losers of the Cold War, ended up acquiring Colt, a symbol of the West.
And in 2025, the CZ 75 celebrated its 50th anniversary. During this time, technology has advanced significantly: polymer frames, striker-fired systems, modular designs, and the widespread use of red dot sights. However, the CZ 75 has not become outdated; rather, its classic design is recognized as a valuable feature (the CZ 75B remained a catalog model until 2021).

- KSC CZ75 1st HW system7
This is the only first-generation model in the gas blowback series, and the definitive version. It faithfully inherits both the strengths and weaknesses of the real thing (the slide stop lever won't break).
- KSC CZ75 1st ABS system 7
The material is ABS resin, not hardweight resin. The sliding speed during operation is incredibly fast, but it's more fragile than the HW version, so you need to be careful.
- Tokyo Marui CZ75 First Model High Grade Air Cocking Gun
This is a standard air-cocking handgun from Tokyo Marui. However, it realistically inherits the unique slide shape of the CZ75, so cocking it requires some skill.
- Manga: Gunsmith Cat
The main character, Larry Vincent, has a strong affection for the CZ75 1st model. The story is a manga featuring girls, cars, and gun action.
- KSC CZ75 2nd HW system7
KSC is the only company selling a 2nd generation gas blowback model. The one I used in this explanation is, for now, the definitive gas blowback CZ75 2nd generation model. The 2nd generation is quite robust.
- Marushin CZ75 2nd HW Cartridge Ejecting GBB
Marushin Industries sells gas blowback airsoft guns that eject unusual cartridges (they can also fire BBs). I've had a lot of fun playing with them, but be careful as you're highly likely to lose the cartridges. There are many color variations, so I've included a representative model.
- Comic: Pineapple ARMY
This is the story of the protagonist, Jed Goshi, who works as a mercenary after retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps. He uses a CZ75 2nd in one of his jobs related to Eastern Europe.
- Manga: MONSTER
This is a suspense manga set in Germany and the Czech Republic. The main character, Dr. Tenma, uses a CZ75 watch. Although it's a suspense story, the CZ75 makes appearances quite frequently.
- Carbon8 CZ P09 CO2 GBB
Carbon8 has created a CO2 gas blowback model of the CZ polymer auto pistol, the CZ P09. Since it's a recent model, both the accuracy and performance are excellent (I handled it at a trade show). A black version is also available.
- ASG CZ P10 CO2 GBB
This is a model of the compact polymer auto pistol CZ P10. It's made by ASG, a manufacturer based in Denmark, which has an official license agreement with CZ. However, I haven't actually handled this one myself, so I don't know much about it (the electric airsoft version, the Scorpion EVO3 A1, has a good reputation).
- Carbon8 CZ Shadow 2 CO2 GBB
As mentioned in the article, the CZ Shadow 2 is dominating real-life shooting matches. Carbon8 has modeled it as a CO2 gas blowback version. I also got to try it out at an exhibition, and it felt really good. Just like the real thing, Carbon8 sells a variety of upgrade parts for it.
