This time, I'll be reviewing the Tokyo Marui SOCOM MK23 HG air cocking handgun.
Despite being an older model adopted in the 1990s, the actual product is still popular due to its frequent appearances in popular anime and movies such as Metal Gear and Jormungand.
The fact that it's also available as an airsoft gun from Tokyo Marui (both fixed gas and air-cocking versions) and KSC (CO2 gas blowback version) demonstrates its popularity.
Although it was released in 2002, quite a long time ago, it is still the latest model as of 2025, when this is being written, making it an incredibly long-selling model.
Let's take a look at what the actual model is like and review it.
First, let me give you a brief introduction to the actual HK SOCOM Mk23.

HK SOCOM MK23
The real H&K Mk23 SOCOM is a .45 caliber heavy-duty automatic pistol developed by the German company H&K in response to the requirements of the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) (deployment began in 1996). It basically comes as a set with a suppressor and a laser sighting module.

The development history began in 1989 when the U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) launched the Offensive Handgun Weapon System (OHWS) program to select an offensive handgun for close-quarters combat as part of equipment standardization.
Replacing the underpowered 9mm and other calibers, the .45 ACP (+P ammunition specification) was selected, requiring high durability, high reliability (mean time between failures of over 2000 rounds), corrosion resistance, and a system configuration that includes a suppressor and laser aiming module (LAM).
In the 1991 development competition, Heckler & Koch (HK) and Colt were selected, but ultimately HK remained and underwent rigorous testing. The HK OHWS demonstrated an astonishing reliability of over 6,000 rounds on average, far exceeding the requirements, and also cleared a 3-round endurance test and harsh environmental tests (Colt based its design on the Double Eagle).
Following these results, HK secured a production contract in 1995, officially adopting the Mark 23 Mod 0, with deliveries beginning in 1996.

The Mark 23 was a high-performance pistol that met the required specifications, but its large size and weight, operators' familiarity with 9mm ammunition, and the emergence of the smaller and lighter HK USP meant that its initial use was limited. However, through combat experience in the war on terror, the effectiveness of .45 ACP ammunition was re-evaluated, and the Mark 23 once again attracted attention.
In terms of actual combat use, a fictional example based on a true story is presented from Operation Razorback in the 1990s, in which Navy SEALs belonging to a joint CIA and Department of Defense force used the HK MK 23 to silently eliminate armed guards during the arrest of Serbian war criminal Ladislav Zalic. .
In the War on Terror following 9/11, the effectiveness of .45 ACP ammunition was re-recognized, and the use of the MK23 increased again. It seems that it may still be used by some units of USSOCOM. However, this is questionable, as most special forces units likely use Glocks.
It's highly regarded in the civilian market and seems to be quite popular, partly due to its image as a special forces unit and its influence from Metal Gear Solid. It's an interesting phenomenon, similar to what you might see in Japan. However, in America, it's a real item.

Let's start by looking at the outer box.

This is an unusual vertical design for a Tokyo Marui product.
As the model is designed for SOCOM special forces, the packaging features a printed Navy SEALs insignia. While the SOCOM MK23 wasn't exclusively for Navy SEALs but aimed to be the standard pistol for the entire SOCOM Special Operations Group, was the image of special forces being synonymous with Navy SEALs back in 2002, when it was released?

This is an entry-level airsoft gun, and as it's a low-priced model, it has a simple interior.

Let's take a quick look at the exterior.

Other side

Its most notable feature is undoubtedly its size (more on the actual size later). Other features that clearly show the SOCOM's characteristics include a protruding muzzle with threading for a suppressor, a large trigger guard for mounting a laser sight, and HK's unique rail system.
The warning sticker on the front of the slide can be removed cleanly without any tools.

The angular, rugged look is what gives the HK SOCOM MK23 its distinctive character.

The frame has a clamshell construction, so you can see the seam where the left and right sides meet. This is probably unavoidable given that it's in the lower price range and entry-level class. If anything, I'm grateful that it's still being sold for around 3500 yen, even with the price increase.

The large muzzle of the .45 caliber and the polygonal rifling, a specialty of HK, are well reproduced.

It faithfully reproduces features such as the small hammer and the checkering (anti-slip) on the back of the grip.
The overall sculpting is realistically well done, to the point where it's hard to believe it only costs around 3500 yen. The texture is also good, with a nice paint job on the slide and a nice feel to the resin material of the frame. The actual product's frame also looks like it's made of cheap-looking resin, which makes it look even more realistic (at least from what I've seen in photos and videos).
When compared to Tokyo Marui's fixed-gas pistols and KSC's gas blowback pistols, which are in a much higher price range, it doesn't look too inferior.

Let's try attaching the suppressor and laser sight module (the laser is a dummy) that come with the Tokyo Marui fixed gas gun.

The fact that it can be attached so securely shows that the muzzle screws and HK's unique rails are also well-made.
Even though it's already a large model, adding accessories makes it an impressive size that transcends the realm of a typical handgun.

Even when placed next to a 15cm ruler, the SOCOM is easily larger. Hopefully, this gives you a general idea of its size.

The longest dimension is 240mm, so you can see that it's quite large. It's larger than the MAC-11 submachine gun and slightly smaller than the VZ.61 Scorpion.
It's the weight.

Despite its appearance, it weighs a surprisingly light 339.5g. One reason for its lightness is that, unlike many airsoft guns where weights are added inside the grip panels to give it a sense of weight, this model's frame and grip are integrated, making that method impossible (cost considerations also play a role).
Magazine exterior
Let's take a look at the magazine from the side.

Unlike the old-fashioned, thin, chopstick-type magazines, this one has a realistic shape. The real thing has a large double-column magazine that holds 12 large .45 caliber bullets, so this airsoft version also has a considerably large magazine.

Unlike the typical gas blowback pistols with a slit in the middle, this one has a realistic shape, so you load the bullets one at a time (capacity: 26 rounds).

If you find loading BBs one by one troublesome, Tokyo Marui sells a BB loader as an accessory, so you might want to consider using that.

I recommend this because it can be used with various magazines. The smaller version is difficult to use and runs out of ammo quickly, so I think the XL is better.
It's the weight.

The magazine is on the heavier side for an airsoft gun, weighing 144.0g. It seems that the magazine contains a weight, and since weights cannot be added to the gun itself, the magazine is made heavier to give the gun a more substantial feel.
Exterior details
From here, we'll divide the building into sections to take a closer look at its exterior.

We will now look at each of the four sections in detail.
1. Muzzle section
The muzzle features a large .45 caliber barrel, threads for a suppressor, and a well-reproduced polygonal rifling.

This polygonal rifling is said to offer improved accuracy, range, and ease of maintenance compared to conventional rifling, but there are various theories and it's not entirely clear.
In my experience, European companies like HK and GLOCK tend to adopt this design. Interestingly, our own Type 38 and Type 99 rifles also use polygonal rifling (a common design in WWII rifles).
After explaining all that, I must say that it has absolutely nothing to do with the performance of the airsoft gun.
Note that the muzzle thread for the suppressor is an M16 standard thread, not the M14 reverse thread commonly used in airsoft guns. If you want to use a suppressor, we recommend getting an M14 reverse thread adapter.
A distinctive feature of this gun is its tall front sight. This height prevents the front sight from becoming obscured when a suppressor is attached.

The front sight looks like it could be a separate part that can be adjusted left and right, but unfortunately it's molded as one piece with the slide and cannot be adjusted or replaced (this is probably unavoidable due to cost constraints).
With Tokyo Marui's fixed gas system and KSC's gas blowback system, the left and right adjustments and replacements are separate components.
2. Slide center section
First, let's look at the markings.

The markings, including HK (manufacturer), MK23 (model name), USSOCOM (operator), CAl.45 (caliber), and 23-0499® (lot number, serial number), are arranged in a very realistic way.
The engraving itself is deep, the font is clear and easy to read, and I think it's a very well-made product.
Next, let's look at the chamber and extractor.

The chamber also has clear markings, showing that even the smallest details have been faithfully reproduced. The large extractor is molded as one piece with the slide, but the molding is so well done that it looks like a separate part.
The chamber mechanism is also faithfully reproduced; when you pull the slide, the chamber sinks down as if it's diving inside.

This sinking mechanism replicates the short recoil of a real firearm and is a completely unrelated mechanism to airsoft guns, but it is faithfully reproduced (which is important for model-like products).
3. Rear section of the slide
First, let's look at the serrations (anti-slip features) that make it easier to pull out the slide.

The serrations are not very deep, so they don't function very well as a non-slip surface.
This product is an air-cocking gun, and a certain amount of force is required to pull back the slide. Since you probably won't be pulling it by holding the rear end of the slide, I don't think there will be many functional problems (tips on cocking will be explained later).
It's a hammer.


The hammer itself is small to prevent it from snagging on clothing. The hammer has two positions: rest and cocked.

The rear sight, like the front sight, is molded as an integral part of the slide. This is probably unavoidable due to cost considerations.

Both the front and rear sites are large, making them very easy to see.
4. Frame section
Let's start by looking at the rails on the front of the frame.

This is HK's proprietary rail system. When it was introduced in 1996, the design and system, which was based on the premise of equipping handguns with accessories, was quite ambitious (a laser sighting module was developed as part of the set). Among HK products, the USP is the only one that uses this proprietary rail system.
While it's now difficult to use due to its proprietary specifications, this is understandable considering that the original model was released before Picatinny rails became widespread (the Picatinny rail standard was established in 1995).
If you're installing accessories like lights, using a conversion adapter will greatly increase its versatility.
Next is the large trigger guard and trigger.

The trigger is wide enough to ensure a secure pull even when wearing large gloves. The trigger guard is also quite large to make it easy to handle with both hands while wearing gloves.
When viewed from the front, the trigger guard reveals screw holes for securing the laser aiming module.

These screw holes are not dummies; they are fully functional.

Next, let's look at the control system.

• Slide release lever... This product has a safety feature
• Magazine catch... It works exactly as its name suggests.
- Decocking lever: This product is a dummy.
• Thumb safety... This product is a dummy.
The individual controls don't function realistically. The decocking lever and thumb safety are molded as part of the frame, but the molding is good and they look reasonably realistic. Reproducing these details would complicate the mechanism and increase costs, so it's understandable that they're not reproduced perfectly.
The thumb safety and magazine release lever are ambidextrous (the thumb safety is molded integrally with the frame).

Even though it's ambidextrous, the thumb safety is just a dummy, so in effect, it's just the magazine release lever.
Next, try gripping the handle.

The grip is quite large, but it's surprisingly comfortable to hold—it's an excellent grip.
The grip is quite thick, so rather than gripping it tightly, you tend to hold it by pinching the front and back, but the knurling on the front and back of the grip does a good job.


Features
Now let's take a look at the main air cocking function.
I will now start drawing slides.

The spring tension is not applied up to the position shown in the photo below, so not much force is required.

At this point, a short recoil mechanism is activated, causing the barrel to tilt and the ejection port to retract (this is a gimmick unrelated to airsoft guns).
If you pull it back further, the load from the firing spring will increase, making it heavier, but pull the slide back all at once.

Here too, the barrel is clearly tilted, and you can see the short recoil action very well.
We are now ready to launch.

The cocking action of this model is quite easy, thanks to its large size and angular slide shape. It's considerably easier to cock than the Tokyo Marui Colt M1911 Government HG that I reviewed previously.
The trigger position changes when the slide is pulled back and the hammer is cocked, as shown in the picture below.


Incidentally, the hammer can be cocked by moving it with your finger, and since it's a double-action model, the hammer moves just by operating the trigger, but this product is an air-cocking type, so it's just a gimmick and has nothing to do with firing a bullet. Although such a gimmick is not related to the firing mechanism, I personally think it's a good point that it's so well made.
There is about 5mm of play in the cocked trigger position, and the feeling is that the trigger is fired when the load is applied from that point.

The safety is engaged using the slide release lever; as shown in the photo below, lifting the lever engages the safety (the safety can be turned on regardless of the hammer position or cocking position).

Cocking Tips
Here, we'll introduce some tips regarding the cocking resistance, which can be a problem with Tokyo Marui's HG series (for ages 18 and up) airsoft guns.
Even for an average adult male, firing multiple shots in quick succession will be quite tiring due to its weight, but with a little practice, even a petite woman can handle it, so please keep this in mind.
First, when cocking the slide, you'll probably instinctively try to grab the serrations (anti-slip features) at the rear of the slide based on its appearance.

This method requires not only the force to pull the slide but also the force to grip the slide, making cocking quite difficult.
To begin with, when gripping the slide, place your left thumb and index finger on the front corner of the slide.

Pull the slide back slightly to the position just before the load from the firing spring is applied.

When you start pulling the slide from here, don't just pull it with your left hand; instead, pull the slide with your left hand while pushing the grip forward with your right hand.

Momentum is important at this point, so slide all the way through in one go.
If you're having trouble or struggling with cocking your gun, please give this a try. You should be able to get the hang of it with a little practice.
Live-fire performance verification
Here, we will measure the initial velocity.
This model has a fixed hop-up and the specified weight of the 0 BB is 0.25g, so we will be using 0.25g bio BBs for the measurements.
First, let's look at the initial velocity.

With 0.25g BBs, the muzzle velocity is stable at around 54 m/s (approximately 0.37 J). This is about the same as a gas blowback gun with a lower muzzle velocity, and almost the same as the Tokyo Marui M1911 HG air cocking gun I reviewed previously.
Considering the initial velocity, I think the distance at which you can accurately hit a target is around 30 meters or more (if you're just looking at the range, it might exceed 40 meters). Accuracy is a well-established feature of Tokyo Marui products, so there shouldn't be any problems.
Considering the price, it offers quite impressive performance.
Since we're at it, let's also measure the initial velocity with 0.20g BBs.

The muzzle velocity was approximately 0.4J, which was surprisingly higher than that of the 0.25g BBs. While this is close to the margin of error, even stable air-cocking guns can experience changes in muzzle velocity due to humidity and other factors.
Using 0.20g BBs would require modifications to the hop-up system and would shorten the range, so I wouldn't actually use them; this is just for reference.

The firing sound isn't as quiet as I expected (though it's not loud). From the sound, it seems like the piston hitting the wall is causing the entire body to vibrate. This is probably unavoidable since the main body is made of plastic and has a flat shape.

Even with the suppressor attached, it didn't become significantly quieter. Since the noise is caused by the resonance of the main unit, the effect is minimal.
G&G 0.25g Bio BBs
It's inexpensive and accurate, so I use it for a wide range of purposes, from performance testing to airsoft games. It's been a favorite of mine since it first came to Japan (around 2008). It lasts a long time for a biodegradable product.
Summary

Overall, as expected from Tokyo Marui's long-established air-cocking handgun series, it was a very high-performance and high-quality product.
In terms of appearance, the realism and texture have been improved compared to previous models, and it is on par with the company's much higher-priced fixed gas guns and KSC's gas blowback guns.
The slide's paint job, in particular, is of a very high standard, with a matte black finish that suppresses light reflection and creates a unique look.
Although some functions of the control system have been omitted, the various gimmicks, such as the double action, muzzle screws, rails, and short recoil, appear to have been recreated with a level of dedication that is truly impressive.
In terms of performance, the initial velocity is on par with compact gas blowback models, and given that it's from the reputable Tokyo Marui, it's likely to be quite high.
Another point I personally like is that, because the model is the SOCOM MK23, its large size makes it easy to cock. In particular, the long, angular slide has a very good shape for gripping.
While its rugged and large appearance gives it a masculine feel, its ease of cocking makes it a good choice for women as well (though be aware that the grip is large).
