In preparation for writing a review of the next-generation electric airsoft gun Tokyo Marui URG-I SOPMOD BLOCK3 on this blog, I started researching the real URG-I SOPMOD BLOCK3 and got so engrossed that I ended up gathering a considerable amount of information.
This was originally intended to be included as one section of the review, but it was quite lengthy and contained some personally interesting points, so I decided to create this separate page.
Since we have the opportunity, I'd like to use Tokyo Marui's next-generation electric guns and other airsoft guns to explain the real URG-I, from its development background to its deployment in combat and actual evaluation.
Please note that this information is based on my personal research of overseas websites (from official sources to Reddit, etc.), so there may be misinterpretations, translation errors, or slightly outdated information.

Development Background
The URG-I was developed as an improved version of the M4A1 carbine, which the U.S. military had used for many years. However, this development was driven by the shortcomings of the existing model and strong demands from specific units.
This section explains the circumstances leading up to the introduction of URG-I and the confusion surrounding its name.
Evolution and Challenges of the SOPMOD Program
The SOPMOD program, which began with this, was conceived in 1989 as an accessory system to allow for the configuration of M4A1 carbines and other small arms used by units under the command of the United States Special Operations Command (US SOCOM) to be customized to meet specific requirements and the preferences of individual soldiers.
Accessory kits such as BLOCK I and BLOCK II were developed for the M4AA1 carbine, standardizing optical sights, laser devices, lights, foregrips, suppressors, and other accessories.

The SOPMOD BLOCK II features the RIS II (Rail Interface System II) Picanity Quad Rail Handguard from Daniel Defense, improving both the freedom of accessory attachment and robustness.

However, in the 2010s, several issues began to become apparent with the M4A1 carbine in the BLOCK II configuration.
- The new 5.56mm ammunition, M855A1 EPR (Enhanced Performance Round), generates higher chamber pressure than the conventional M855A1, increasing the load on existing gas systems. This has led to increased malfunctions, reduced component lifespan, and increased gas blowback to the shooter, especially in the operation of special operations units that constantly use suppressors.

- While the RIS II handguard is robust, its weight and somewhat bulky design create ergonomic problems such as discomfort and fatigue during prolonged carrying and shooting positions.

These challenges were difficult to solve with the traditional SOPMOD BLOCK concept, which simply involves adding or changing accessories.
What was needed were fundamental improvements to the gas system, which is crucial to the M4A1's operating mechanism, and to the handguard area, which affects the overall ergonomics of the gun. In other words, it was an evolution of the SOPMOD program, aimed not simply at replacing accessories, but at improving the performance of the M4A1 upper receiver group itself.
This development will lead to the URG-I program (Upper Receiver Group-Improved).
Development
The URG-I program is not a unified program across US SOCOM, but will be initiated primarily by the United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC).
*US SOCOM is an organization that has special forces in all domains: land, sea, and air.
The reason the Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) took the lead was to directly address the demands of its subordinate units, such as the 1st Special Forces Command (commonly known as the Green Berets) and the 75th Ranger Regiment, regarding optimization for the M855A1EPR ammunition, improved reliability when suppressors are constantly in use, and ergonomic improvements.


The solution to these demands was to develop and supply a new upper receiver group (partly for the sake of appealing to Congress).

The U.S. Department of Defense budget proposal for fiscal year 2017 included a plan to procure 426 rifle upper receiver groups (URGs) for US SOCOM, which is thought to be the initial procurement for the URG program.
At the same time, the fact that the Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) led the URG program may indicate a shift in equipment procurement within US SOCOM, potentially allowing specific units to pursue improvements tailored to their operational requirements more quickly and flexibly, without having to wait for large-scale, unified block upgrades across SOCOM as was the case in the past.
This change could lead to a shift towards more diverse approaches to address the varied mission environments of each special forces unit, but in the initial stages, it could reduce the level of equipment standardization between different units within SOCOM.
This diversification of equipment among special forces units is a frequent occurrence and a problem (a cycle of diversification → standardization → diversification, which was particularly severe during the Vietnam War).

Regarding the name of URG-I SOPMOD BLOCK3
The official name of the new upper receiver group is "URG-I (Upper Receiver Group-Improved)".
It's sometimes misunderstood, but it's not officially named "SOPMOD BLOCK3".
*SOPMOD BLOCK refers to the entire system, including accessories.
Rifles equipped with URG-I are still often considered to use components from BLOCK II as part of their accessory package (optics, laser sight modules, lights, etc.).
However, in the civilian and cloning communities, the URI-I configuration is sometimes informally referred to as "BLOCK3," reflecting the fact that major upgrades to the M4 carbine have traditionally been associated with the SOPMOD BLOCK system.
*A cloning community is a community that attempts to recreate military models.
Technically, the URG-I differs from previous SOCOM-wide upgrade concepts in that it focuses on improvements to the upper receiver group itself (mainly the gas system and handguard) rather than being a collection of accessories, and that it was initiated under the leadership of the Army Special Operations Command (USASOC).
In reality, "BLOCK 3" was not formulated for SOCOM as a whole. Possible reasons for this include the fact that each unit was able to make necessary improvements through already established procurement routes, and that the specific requirements of each unit became more important than the unified requirements for SOCOM as a whole.
Perhaps the introduction of URG-I could be seen as the end of, or a change in, the traditional "BLOCK" concept in the SOPMOD program.
URG-I Program
The URG-I program aimed to improve the performance of the M4 rifle. The U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) provided clear requirements and collaborated with top manufacturers capable of meeting them.
Here, let's look at the main technologies incorporated into URG-I and its development history.
USASOC requirements and participating manufacturers
The requirements of the URG-I program from the Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) were clearly aimed at improving upon the existing M4A1 Block II, as follows:
- Improved reliability and accuracy when using M855A1 EPR ammunition.
- Improved usability and reliability when using a suppressor.
- Improved ergonomics compared to the RIS II handguard on the BLOCK II.
- Compatibility with existing M4A1 lower receivers
- Adoption of the M-LOK handguard system

Of particular importance was the adoption of a mid-length gas system to improve reliability and accuracy when using the M855A1 EPR.

The mid-length gas system was expected to provide a smoother operation, reduce recoil, and extend component life compared to the carbine-length gas system.

The advantages of mid-length designs were also confirmed in tests conducted by the Naval Sea Warfare Center Crane (NSWC Crane).

Furthermore, specific components such as the Geissele Automatics Mk16 rail and Airborne Charging Handle (ACH) were required. Regarding the distinctive external color, desert tan was specified for the main components.


Several companies were involved in the development and manufacture of the URG-I, with Geissele Automatics and Daniel Defense playing key roles.
- Geissele Automatics
They are known for their high-precision trigger systems (they offer SSF triggers for SOPMOD).
For the URG-I, they secured contracts to supply the Mk16 Super Modular Rail Handguard (SMR), Airborne Charging Handle (ACH), and initially, the Super Gas Block. However, the gas blocks that were actually supplied were later transferred to Daniel Defense.
- Daniel Defense
This manufacturer is highly regarded for its high-quality AR-15 components, especially barrels and rails.
The URG-I program features a 14.5-inch, mid-length gas system with a cold-forged (CHF) "GOV" profile barrel, which is its heart. It also plays a crucial role in the gas block specification change (from Mk12 to fixed LPGB).
*GOV Profile: Abbreviation for Government Profile Barrel, a standard that conforms to the heavy barrel established when the M16A2 was adopted.
In addition to the two main companies mentioned above, other components are supplied by existing, reliable suppliers.

Thus, the URG-I was not developed by a single manufacturer supplying everything, but by bringing together the expertise of companies with proven track records in each field. The rail and charging handle are from Geissele, and the barrel and gas system are from Daniel Defense. This approach of selecting and combining the "best of bred" in each field is a characteristic method of US SOCOM.
initial deployment
The URG-I program began in the mid-2010s when the Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) started to recognize the limitations of the M4A1.
The formal procurement plan will begin to appear in the 2017 budget proposal.
Prior to deployment, various tests and validations were conducted, including an evaluation of the mid-length gas system by the Naval Naval Warfare Crew (NSWC Crane).
It became more widely known around 2018-2019 when it began to be deployed to Army Rangers and Special Forces (Green Berets).


Geissele began selling "near-clone" versions of upper receiver groups and complete rifles that closely resembled military models to the civilian market around 2019-2020.
The relatively rapid development and deployment of the URG-I was due in part to its effective use of existing, commercially available components. Daniel Defense barrels and Geissele rail systems were already on the market and had been developed for other contractors before the URG-I program was officially launched.
The program focused on selecting and integrating these excellent existing products and adding specific improvements to meet the required specifications, such as adopting a mid-length gas system and pinning the gas block.
This approach is believed to have significantly reduced development time compared to designing everything from scratch.
Technical specifications and features
The URG-I, the 14.5-inch model primarily used by USASOC, consists of the following main components (MSN 1005-01-671-3911).

This Daniel Defense 14.5-inch "GOV" profile dart is made from cold-forged (CHF) chromium-vanadium steel with a chrome-lined interior.
The rifling twist ratio is 1:7, and it is designed for 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition, specifically optimized for M855A1 ammunition.
- gas block
Initially, a Daniel Defense Mk12 gas block (set screw fixed type) was used, but due to interference issues with the Geissele Mk16 handguard (potential contact during drops, etc.), it was changed to a slimmer Daniel Defense Low Profile Gas Block (LPGB).
This LPGB is secured to the barrel by a tapered pin, resulting in an extremely strong attachment, and is sometimes described as "bombproof."

- Muzzle device
Initially, the standard equipment was the SureFire SF4P (four-prong type) flash hider (FH556RC). This is compatible with the SureFire SOCOM suppressor. In some operational examples and clone models, the SureFire Warcomp, which is also suppressor compatible, is used.
In civilian "near-clone" models, the muzzle device is typically pinned and welded in place to comply with the federal law (NFA)'s minimum barrel length requirement (16 inches).

Geissele Super Modular Rail (SMR) Mk16. It is 13.5 inches long and uses the M-LOK accessory mounting system. The specified color is Desert Dirt (DDC, NSN 1005-01-672-4794).
Compared to the RIS II in Block II, it is characterized by being slimmer and lighter.

- Bolt Carrier Group
This is a standard M4A1/M16 fully automatic BCG (Bullet Control Gun). In the early days, Colt and FN-made versions were commonly used.
Geissele's "Near Clone" uppers may incorporate their own Reliability Enhanced BCG.
- Upper receiver
A standard forged M4/M4A1 flat-top upper receiver, often referenced in clone builds, is the Colt version.

- Site
It appears that Knight's Armament (KAC) micro flip-up sights are often fitted as backup iron sights (BUIS) (the front sight is taupe-colored P/N 99051, and the rear sight is made by KAC or Matec).
The optical sights primarily used vary depending on the unit and mission, but LPVO (low magnification scopes) such as the Elcan Specter DR, Vortex Razor HD Gen II-E, and Nightforce ATACR are commonly seen in reference photos and clone models.


- Accessories
Magpul M-LOK rail sections and QD sling mounts are often included in the specifications or provided as standard accessories.

Some units of the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) have adopted a configuration that combines a standard CQBR (Close Quarters Battle Receiver) with a 10.3-inch barrel and a 9.3-inch Geissele Mk16 SMR (DDC color).
Although it is sometimes unofficially referred to as the "10.3-inch URG-I," it is technically a separate program from the URG-I program of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command (USASOC)..
This is considered a modernization modification that involves replacing the handguard of an existing Mk18 Mod 1/CQBR upper receiver with a Geissele Mk16 rail, and in some cases adding a Geissele airborne charging handle.
There is debate about the barrel used (whether it is Colt or Daniel Defense, etc.), but it is likely that it is a standard 10.3-inch CHF barrel (the same one used on the Mk18) that the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) already possessed.It seems expensive..

Here, we explore which units have been deployed to the URG-I and how its performance is being perceived, drawing on official reports and user feedback from overseas forums like Reddit.

The deployment of the URG-I was not carried out uniformly across USSOCOM, but was concentrated in the Army Special Operations Command (USASOC), and adopted by some units of the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC).

This deployment status indicates that the URG-I was primarily a system for the Army Special Operations Command (USASOC), and although the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) adopted some of its design elements, it did not become a universal standard equipment that replaced Block II across SOCOM.
This could be seen as a sign that within SOCOM, each constituent military command is increasingly tending to select and improve equipment based on its own requirements.

Compared to the HK416, another major modern carbine used within US SOCOM, the URG-I is based on a different design philosophy.

The fact that both high-performance DI systems (URG-I) and piston systems (HK416) exist and continue to be used within US SOCOM suggests that there may not be a single best solution for all applications (it might simply be a matter of preference).
Current situation and future outlook
URG-I is still in operation, primarily within USASOC's ODA/Ranger and some AFSOC units.
While it is still considered a modern and effective upgrade to the M4A1 platform, the M4A1 in SOPMOD Block II configuration is also still widely used within SOCOM and throughout the U.S. military.
While the URG-I represented the cutting edge of M4A1 upgrades for certain SOCOM units, it did not lead to a complete replacement of the older system across the entire command.

Impact of the Next Generation Squad Weapons Program (NGSW)
The U.S. Army is promoting the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program, and SIG has won the contract for it.

The NGSW system includes the XM7 rifle, which replaces the M4/M4A1 carbine, and the XM250 squad support weapon, which replaces the M249 squad support weapon (SAW). Both weapons use newly developed 6.8mm ammunition.


NGSW is planned for "Close Combat Forces" such as infantry, scouts, and combat engineers, and these branches are also included in many SOCOM units such as Rangers and Special Forces.
US SOCOM is deeply involved in and supports the NGSW program, and has conducted tests and evaluations by special operations forces, with special operations forces also included in the actual deployment plan.
The new 6.8mm ammunition is designed to offer significant performance improvements compared to the conventional 5.56mm ammunition in terms of effective range, power, and penetration against body armor.
Deployment of the NGSW has already begun, with the 101st Airborne Division and National Guard units receiving the weapons (the rifles are officially designated as M7).

Coexistence of M4 and NGSW series
Although NGSW is the designated successor system, a complete transition from the 5.56mm platform to the 6.8mm system is expected to take several years (as of 2025, orders for 107000 units are planned for the next 10 years).
Therefore, variants of the M4 (including the URG-I) are likely to remain in service for a considerable period of time, especially in support units and units that are not high on the initial deployment priority list for NGSW.
Within SOCOM, 5.56mm platforms such as the URG-I and SURG are likely to continue to be used in certain missions where the characteristics of 6.8mm ammunition (weight, recoil) are not necessarily advantageous (for example, some CQB scenarios, training, and operations requiring greater covertness).
The funding cycle and logistical challenges associated with introducing new calibers will likely contribute to maintaining the existing M4/URG-I system infrastructure for the time being.
It is likely that SOCOM will continue to have a mix of small arms of different calibers and platforms for some time to come.
While the role of the URG-I may diminish in frontline combat units receiving the NGSW, its proven performance, existing logistics, and potential advantages compared to the NGSW (lightweight, low recoil, etc.) make it highly likely to remain in use for specialized purposes, training, and reserve units.
Related to other SOCOM programs (e.g., SURG)
In parallel with the URG-I program, US SOCOM was also pursuing other small arms modernization programs. One of these was the SURG (Suppressed Upper Receiver Group) program.
This required an upper receiver group specifically optimized for suppressor use, and envisioned the adoption of integrated suppressors or very high-performance detachable suppressors.
This contract was won by Sig Sauer for an upper-end model based on the MCX platform.

The SURG's specifications focused on suppressor performance that exceeded the level offered by standard M4 upper receivers (including the URG-I), including sound suppression, reliability, thermal management, and minimizing point of impact shift.
The URG-I and SURG programs were parallel initiatives aimed at addressing different primary goals.
While the URG-I aimed for overall improvement of the general-purpose M4A1 upper receiver, the SURG pursued suppressor performance optimized for more specific roles.
According to one comment, USASOC did not participate in the SURG program because they believed the URG-I would meet their requirements, which may indicate that different commands had different levels of suppressor performance requirements.
In any case, the SURG is a model specialized for very specific uses, so it is unlikely to compete with the URG-I.

The URG-I (Upper Receiver Group – Improved) was a specialized upgrade developed under the leadership of USASOC to address the performance limitations of the SOPMOD Block II configuration M4A1 carbine when using M855A1 ammunition and suppressors.
